Atlético Madrid and Arsenal FC played out a 1–1 draw in their UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return fixture.
Arsenal took the lead in the first half after Viktor Gyökeres converted from the penalty spot, following a foul in the box. The visitors controlled much of the early proceedings and looked composed going forward.
Atlético Madrid responded strongly after the break and restored parity through Julián Álvarez, who also scored from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a handball inside the area.
The match remained tightly contested, with both sides creating chances in a tense second half. Arsenal thought they had been awarded a late penalty, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check.
Despite late pressure from both teams, neither side could find a winner, as the match ended 1–1.
The result sets up a decisive second leg with everything still to play for.
