A new analysis of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has identified 48 points as the key benchmark for teams aiming to avoid relegation.
The report shows that survival in the NPFL is often decided by very narrow margins, sometimes as little as one point, with tiebreakers frequently determining which teams stay up.
Historical data reviewed in the study indicates that teams typically require between 48 and 52 points to remain in the top flight. Hitting 48 points gives clubs about a 60 percent chance of survival, while reaching 52 points significantly improves their chances.
The analysis also revealed that in some seasons, teams have survived with as low as 45 points, while others have been relegated despite accumulating as many as 50 points, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the league.
In the ongoing 2025/2026 season, the relegation battle remains particularly tight, with only a few points separating mid-table teams from those in the drop zone as the campaign nears its end.
The study further noted that consistency, strong home performances, and defensive discipline are key factors that often determine whether a team survives.
With margins so slim, even a single result in the closing stages of the season could prove decisive in the fight to avoid relegation.
