At least 90 killed in Bangladesh renewed violence

The incident happened as police fired tear gas and lobbed stun grenades to disperse scores of protesters who returned to the streets to ask Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign.

According to the Deputy Inspector General of the Bangladesh police, Vijay Basak, the attack on the security agents took place at the Enayetpur police station in the northwest city of Sirajganj.

The demonstrators are demanding Hasina’s resignation after earlier protests in July calling for an end to a quota system for government jobs, which escalated into violence that killed about two hundred people.

Hasina said those who were engaging in what he described as sabotage and the destruction in the name of protests were no longer students, but criminals, who should be dealt with iron hands.

In the meantime; authorities have blocked internet access and imposed a shoot-on-sight curfew.
