Reports say people attended church services outside because the rooftops of some worship centres have been blown off by the category-four storm.

Meanwhile; authorities in the Caribbean country are worried about imminent outbreak of cholera due to the pollution left behind by the storm.

This is because tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed, with more than sixty thousand people sent into temporary shelters.

Thirteen people have already died from cholera following widespread flooding, which has raised fears of an outbreak similar to 2010 when nearly ten thousand people died.

So far, it is estimated that some nine hundred people died in Haiti alone as a result of Hurricane Matthew.

The United Nations is also preparing to deal with the emergency caused by Hurricane Matthew, with the humanitarian co-ordinator in Haiti, MOURAD WAHBA, saying one million people in urgent need of assistance are being anticipated.

Meanwhile; the storm weakened as it slammed the coast of the United States, killing at least sixteen people.

Officials have warned people in North Carolina to stay at home and avoid taking unnecessary risks.
