The Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Aboiya-a Bob-Fubara, says his administration is committed to improving literacy among residents of the area.
Bob-Fubara stated this in a message to mark this year’s International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8.
The council chairman commended stakeholders for their efforts towards improving literacy and knowledge in Akuku-Toru, assuring that his administration would invest in scholarly activities aimed at promoting current, functional and digital literacy among students and teachers.
He also encouraged students and residents to embrace opportunities that would enable them to apply their knowledge meaningfully in their various endeavours.
As part of activities marking International Literacy Day, the council chairman is expected to celebrate and reward students who recorded outstanding performances in examinations conducted at the end of a one-month summer class in Abonnema.
In a statement, Bob-Fubara said the closing ceremony fulfils his pledge to give special attention to students who participated in the holiday programme.
He described investment in the younger generation as a seed that would yield fruitful results, stressing that his administration is determined to ensure that students from Akuku-Toru acquire the knowledge and skills needed to compete favourably with their peers.
The chairman also commended the organisers, teachers and students of the summer class for their commitment, outstanding performance and cooperation throughout the programme.
