ADC Chieftain Seeks Amendment of Electoral Act 2026

A member of the African Democratic Congress, Sam Amadi, has called for an urgent amendment of the Electoral Act 2026 to remove the proviso permitting manual transmission of election results where electronic transmission is not possible.

Amadi made the call during the Citizens’ Townhall on the 2026 Electoral Act, where he described the provision as a major setback to electoral transparency. He argued that allowing manual transmission in areas without network coverage could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and open the door to manipulation.

According to him, the amendment is both urgent and necessary to safeguard the integrity of future elections. He maintained that technological challenges should not justify retaining a clause that may weaken public confidence in the system.

Amadi further stated that if Bola Tinubu could approve the reversion of the national anthem within a day, there is no reason the Electoral Act 2026, which was signed into law last month, cannot be revisited and amended in the interest of democracy.
