Activist Demands Evacuation of Bille Residents Over Environmental Concerns

Human rights activist, Courage Nsirimovu, has said recent government promises to upgrade the healthcare centre in Bille community do not address the immediate crisis confronting residents of the area.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, had pledged to improve the facility following environmental concerns in Bille, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

But speaking with our reporter, Nsirimovu said upgrading the health centre should not be the priority when the immediate survival of the people is under threat. He called for the urgent evacuation of residents from the community rather than infrastructural upgrades.

The activist also urged oil and gas operators in Bille to carry out a complete overhaul of their aging facilities and pipelines before extracting any further resources from the area.
