Some three hundred and forty-four sacked workers of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori have dragged the Rivers State Government to court. The matter was filed at the National Industrial Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State by lawyers from the Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law led by ANYAKWE NSIRIMOVU. A source close to the sacked workers told our correspondent that the court papers were served on the Rivers State Government on Friday last week. Other parties in the matter are the State Ministry of Education and the management of Rivers State Polytechnic, now Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori.
Our source said the sacked workers decided to take legal action against the state government because several attempt to have Governor NYESOM WIKE to reverse their sack had fallen on deaf ears. The affected employees of former RIVPOLY were sacked weeks before they were due to formerly resume duty, soon after Governor WIKE assumed office. The management of the institution had completed the recruitment process and went ahead to issue employment letters and identification cards, as well as open salary accounts for the affected workers. The authorities however turned around to sack the new recruits on grounds that due process was not followed in their engagement.
However; the action was interpreted in some quarters as an act of vendetta by the PDP administration led by Governor NYESOM WIKE against the immediate-past APC government led by former governor ROTIMI CHIBUIKE AMAECHI.
