Senator BUKOLA SARAKI said the constitution amendment assignment undertaken by the Eighth National Assembly is meant to address issues pertaining to the conduct of elections.
Senator SARAKI gave this indicate when he received members of the Nigerian Bar Association led by the President, ABUBAKAR MAHMUD at his office in Abuja.
The Senate President said the National Assembly decided to deal with the amendment early to avoid any problems during the next general elections in 2019.
He said the objective is to simplify the process, by reviewing the earlier document that was completed by the last Assembly but not signed into law.
Senator SARAKI noted that working in collaboration with the House of Representatives, the Senate hopes to harmonise the different positions.
In his remarks; according to a statement released by SARAKI’s media team, the NBA President said the association was interested in the amendment of the Electoral Act.
ABUBAKAR MAHMUD particularly wants the legislature to pay attention to the issue of postponement of elections on the basis of security-related challenges.
Other areas of interest to the NBA include constitutional amendments, justice sector reforms, with emphasis on the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Prisons Reforms and the Legal Aid Council.
