Opposition political parties and key political actors are adopting strategic measures to protect their candidates and supporters following recent attacks and disruptions involving some opposition parties.
The development comes amid growing concerns over the safety of politicians and their supporters as campaigns and political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
One of the recent incidents involved the alleged blockage of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, and his entourage during campaign-related visits to Edo State.
Reacting to the development, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Dikwa Mohammed, called on security agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the electoral process.
Mohammed, who spoke in a telephone interview with Today FM’s Olawale Sanusi, urged security personnel to recognise that elections are temporary, while communities and relationships among citizens remain permanent.
He also appealed to political parties and their candidates to avoid inflammatory statements, hate speech and actions capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.
The NNPP presidential candidate advised Nigerians against risking their lives or destroying relationships over political interests, stressing that political alliances and interests could change after the elections.
