The National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, says activities at designated motor parks and loading points in Rivers State are part of the enforcement of its statutory responsibilities and legitimate operational duties.
Speaking with TODAY FM correspondent, Eseose Onabu, Chairman of the Rumuola Branch of the NURTW, Comrade Julius Uchenna-Uzoma, said the union is working to distinguish its legitimate loading and booking dues from illegal extortion.
Uchenna-Uzoma explained that the Obio-Akpor Local Government Council has established a task force to curb the harassment of drivers by touts.
He said the union supports the council’s efforts, stressing that its levies are strictly for vehicle loading and booking and should not be confused with illegal charges.
On the registration of members, the NURTW chairman said the union initially faced resistance from some associations over its plan to profile and register all drivers operating in the area.
Uchenna-Uzoma, however, disclosed that a court injunction has restrained the associations and directed compliance with the registration process.
He said the union is currently in final discussions with the local government council to ensure proper alignment before enforcing the court order.
