NSIB says private jet landed on wrong surface after missed first approach to Asaba

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has revealed that the private jet that mistakenly landed on a road under construction near Asaba Airport had earlier discontinued its first landing attempt before making a second approach that ended on the wrong surface.

In a preliminary report on the June 10 incident, the Bureau said the Bombardier Challenger 601-3A aircraft, with registration number N989BC and operated by VMO Aero Limited, was flying from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to Asaba under Instrument Flight Rules when the incident occurred. According to the report, the crew aborted the initial approach, repositioned for another landing on Runway 11 and believed they were correctly aligned with the published RNAV approach.

The NSIB said the second approach, however, resulted in the aircraft touching down on a road under construction near the airport instead of the runway. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review flight data, cockpit recordings and other evidence to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
