Switzerland advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 2-0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver, ending an 88-year wait for a World Cup knockout win. The result was a major milestone for the Swiss, who had lost each of their previous seven knockout matches at the tournament.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead in the 10th minute after a strong run and assist from Johan Manzambi, before Dan Ndoye struck less than a minute into the second half to put the match beyond Algeria. The Swiss capitalised on defensive errors and maintained control for much of the contest.
Algeria had made a lively start and created a few openings in the first half, but they were unable to convert their chances. Switzerland, under coach Murat Yakin, delivered a disciplined tactical display, absorbing pressure and hitting their opponents at key moments.
The win sends Switzerland into the last 16, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver next week. For Algeria, the defeat means another African side has exited the competition at the Round of 32 stage.
