The operation involving some forty coordinated rescue missions off the Libyan town of Sabratha has been dubbed the biggest of its kind ever.
The rescued migrants are mainly from Eritrea and Somalia, including more than one thousand, one hundred who were rescued in a single operation on Sunday.
Another operation yesterday involved vessels from Italy, the European Union border agency as well as Proactiva Open Arms and Medecins Sans Frontieres NGOs.
