Former Manchester City captain Fernandinho has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.
He ended his career with Athletico Paranaense, the club where he began his professional journey, playing his farewell match at the Arena da Baixada stadium.
During his career, Fernandinho won six league titles and a UEFA Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk before joining Manchester City in 2013. At City, he won five Premier League titles, six League Cups, an FA Cup, and made 383 appearances.
Fernandinho said he decided to retire because his body “gave its final warning” and added that he had achieved everything he could in football and now wanted to spend time with his family.
Internationally, he earned 53 caps for Brazil and was part of the team that won the 2019 Copa América.
