A former President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Legborsi Pyagbara, has urged the Rivers State Government to urgently initiate proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the anticipated flooding in the state.
Speaking in Port Harcourt during a one-day workshop on climate change loss and damage, Pyagbara expressed concern over the lack of action by state and local authorities despite early warnings from relevant agencies.
He noted that the looming disaster could have devastating consequences on already vulnerable communities if nothing is done to prepare and protect residents.
Pyagbara, who is also the Executive Director of the African Indigenous Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development, further encouraged residents of the Niger Delta to engage in tree planting efforts as a means of combating climate change. He explained that increased tree cover would help absorb excess carbon in the atmosphere and contribute to long-term environmental resilience.
