Congolese Government Confirms Targeting of Aircraft in Minembwe Amid Regional Tensions

Minembwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo — The Congolese government has announced that it targeted an aircraft in the district of Minembwe, near the borders with Rwanda and Burundi. The government states the aircraft was blown up after it was identified as a threat, though rebels claim it was delivering food aid to the region.

This incident marks the latest violence in the area since a ceasefire agreement was signed in Washington last Friday, aimed at easing ongoing hostilities.

According to the Congolese army, the aircraft was tracked via radar, which showed it had entered Congolese airspace without proper authorization and lacked any form of identification. The military asserts that the plane posed a security risk, prompting the decision to neutralize it.

Rebels and local sources have disputed the government’s account, insisting the aircraft was engaged in humanitarian activities. The incident has heightened regional tensions, just days after the peace accord aimed at stabilizing the volatile border region.
