Zambia Police release opposition leader as Commonwealth moves for peace talks.

The leader of the United Progressive Party was arrested on the premises of a privately-owned television station for allegedly defaming President EDGAR LUNGU.

Zambia police spokesperson ESTHER MWAATA KATONGO confirmed the release and also the decision to discontinuation of the case.

The move comes after the Commonwealth secured the commitment of the two main political rivals in Zambia to participate in talks to address political tensions in the country.

Commonwealth Secretary General PATRICIA SCOTLAND said she spoke separately with President EDGAR LUNGU and detained opposition leader HAKAINDE HICHILEMA on her visit to Zambia.

You will recall that HICHILEMA is awaiting trial on treason charges after he was arrested for allegedly blocking the presidential motorcade.
