Wike Rules Out Recommending Commissioners for Fubara as Rivers Governor Resumes Office

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will not interfere in the affairs of Rivers State, particularly in the appointment of commissioners, as Governor Siminalayi Fubara returns to office after six months of emergency rule.

President Bola Tinubu had in March imposed emergency rule in Rivers State, following months of political tension and violent clashes linked to the deepening rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. The decision led to the suspension of democratic structures in the state and the appointment of a Sole Administrator to manage its affairs.

Speaking on the matter, Wike stated that he has no intention of recommending commissioners or influencing the formation of Fubara’s cabinet. According to him, even if the governor were to consult him, his only advice would be to allow Fubara full freedom to administer the state as he deems fit.

“I will not be the one to recommend commissioners for Governor Fubara,” Wike said. “If he comes to me for advice, I will tell him to choose the people he believes can help him succeed. He must be allowed to govern without interference.”

The statement comes against the backdrop of speculation that the political crisis in Rivers State stemmed partly from disagreements over appointments and control of key state structures. Many observers had feared that Fubara’s reinstatement would rekindle tensions, especially if external forces sought to dictate the composition of his government.

Wike’s latest remarks may signal a shift from the confrontational exchanges of recent months, where both camps traded accusations and deepened divisions among their supporters. Political analysts say his assurance of non-interference could help ease fears of renewed instability, though they caution that trust between both leaders remains fragile.

Governor Fubara is expected to immediately focus on rebuilding his administration, restoring public confidence, and addressing urgent governance challenges that piled up during the emergency rule. Citizens and stakeholders across the state are watching closely to see whether the governor can consolidate his position and foster unity after months of uncertainty.
