To this end, a delegation of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is to return to Banjul tomorrow for further talks with President YAHYA JAMMEH.
This was the outcome of a mediatory meeting convened in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by President MUHAMMADU BUHARI, who is the Chief Mediator.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, GEOFFREY ONYEMA while reading the communiqué adopted at the end of the meeting, said the ECOWAS leaders expressed deep concerns about the threat to peace in The Gambia.
In addition to President BUHARI, the meeting was also attended by the Presidents of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and the immediate-past President of Ghana, JOHN MAHAMA.
The long-serving President of the Gambia was defeated in a presidential election on 1st December by opposition candidate, ADAMA BARROW.
But YAHYAH JAMMEH has since turned around to challenge the result of the election after initially conceding defeat.
The United Nations Security Council has also joined in pilling pressure on JAMMEH to step down after the expiration of his current term on 19th of January, which completes twenty-two years he has been in power.
