WAEC TO INTRODUCE COMPUTER-BASED EXAMINATIONS NEXT YEAR

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced plans to commence computer-based examinations, tagged CB-WASSCE, as part of efforts to curb examination malpractice and strengthen the integrity of its assessment process.

According to the examination body, the new system—which will combine both digital and manual features—is expected to begin next year with the current Senior Secondary Three (SS3) students across the country.

Speaking during a sensitization rally in Port Harcourt, the Zonal Coordinator of WAEC, Port Harcourt Office, Adeniran Amusan, explained that the digitalization initiative is aimed at eliminating examination leakages, ensuring timely conduct of exams, and improving overall efficiency.

Amusan noted that the CB-WASSCE will also help address logistical challenges such as the late arrival of question papers, while the use of computers will allow for automatic timing of students to promote fairness and transparency.

He added that the innovation aligns with global best practices and will better prepare Nigerian students for technology-driven assessments in the future. Amusan, therefore, urged schools, teachers, parents, and students to embrace the transition as a positive step toward the modernization of education in Nigeria.

Some students, however, expressed mixed reactions—while many commended the initiative as a bold move toward digital literacy, others voiced concerns about limited access to computers and inadequate exposure to digital learning tools.
