Reports say authorities in Washington are considering investing at least fifty million dollars in the air base that will be capable of deploying drones.
The new air base is in addition to the US military presence in the capital Niamey, where it shares an airbase with the French anti-Islamist force,
It is from Operation Barkhane base that the US deploys its MQ-9 Reaper drones.
However; the new facility in the central city of Agadez will give the US greater ability to use drones against Islamist extremists in neighbouring countries like Libya, Mali and Nigeria.
