The US Navy said five sailors were also injured after the guided missile destroyer USS John S McCain was sailing east of Singapore.
Official statement said the destroyer was preparing to stop in the port when the collision with the Liberian-flagged vessel occurred.
The incident marked the second collision involving a US Navy ship in recent months, following a similar incident involving USS Fitzgerald for which the Navy has sanctioned the commanding officer and some sailors.
