University Lecturers Protest Nationwide Over Unimplemented 2009 FG/ASUU Agreement

University lecturers across the country have staged protests against the Federal Government’s failure to implement the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.

At the University of Port Harcourt, the chairman of ASUU, Professor Omeh Ngwoke, said the government’s inaction has pushed many lecturers to seek opportunities abroad. He accused the Federal Government of paying lip service to education and called on stakeholders to intervene before the situation worsens.

Ngwoke further disclosed that efforts by the renegotiation committee to engage the government have yielded no positive outcome. Fearing another round of strike, some UNIPORT students urged the Federal Government to resume negotiations, stressing that they do not want any disruption to their academic calendar.

Similarly, the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Rivers State University condemned the Federal Government for failing to implement the 2009 agreement. The chairman of ASUU at the institution, Emmanuel Davies, faulted the government for neglecting academic staff welfare while prioritizing salary reviews for politicians.

Davies also lamented the non-release of revitalization funds for public universities, warning that education in Nigeria is at risk if urgent investments are not made. Some lecturers at the meeting expressed frustration, noting that even professors have abandoned teaching to pursue politics due to poor conditions in the education sector.
