The Public Relations Officer of the University of Port Harcourt, WILLIAMS WODI made the call against the backdrop of the kidnap of another staff of the institution, Professor JOHN OKORIE of the Engineering Faculty.
Our correspondent gathered that Professor OKORIE who is the Director of Offshore Technology Institute at the University was kidnapped on his way home at the close of work on Monday.
A source at the university who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said the kidnappers have not made contact with either the family of the victim or UNIPORT management.
Meanwhile; the spokesman for UNIPORT management, WILLIAMS WODI complained that kidnapping of lecturers has become rampant and was adversely affecting the academic environment.
He said members of staff who reside on campus now live in fear, while overseas scholars who usually collaborate with the institution are now unwilling to come over because of security concern.
The Police Public Relations Officer at the Rivers State Police Command, NNAMDI OMONI confirmed that the command was aware of the kidnap of Professor JOHN OKORIE but said there were no details about his whereabouts.
