As part of the University of Port Harcourt’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, leaders of the UNIPORT Alumni Association held a historic engagement with the university’s Student Union Government (SUG) on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the CBN Centre of Excellence.
The meeting, which took place on Alumni Day, featured the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prince Tonye T.J.T. Princewill, and the National President, Senator Darlington Nwokocha. It was described by students as unprecedented in the history of alumni-student relations at the institution.
Princewill told students he considered UniPort his home and encouraged them to remain focused and ambitious, noting that the alumni were ready to support serious students through mentorship, scholarships, and job opportunities. Senator Nwokocha echoed the call for excellence and used the event to unveil the Association’s three-year Legacy Projects, which include premium accommodation for high-performing students, a university library and museum, an agricultural hub, and a bakery and water plant to support entrepreneurship.
SUG President, Rt. Hon. Harmony Lawrence, praised the visit as a historic show of solidarity, while the National Secretary General, Phil Biobele Okoroafor, urged students to stay committed, assuring them that the alumni body believes in their potential.
The session concluded with an inspection of the proposed Alumni Centre site and a courtesy visit hosted by the Rivers State chapter.
The engagement, which marked a major highlight of the Jubilee celebrations, reflects a renewed partnership between alumni and students, aimed at fostering growth and excellence.
