The investigation is being conducted under the auspices of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial and Summary Executions.
The head of the team; Doctor AGNES CALLAMARD, who confirmed the development; said she was probing allegations of killings of over eight hundred citizens, mostly women, children and the elderly.
CALLAMARD said her mission is to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice, and provide reparations to victims.
The UN intervention followed a petition received in December last year from the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP.
