Ride-hailing company Uber has ended its operations in Nigeria after 12 years in the country.
Uber began operations in Nigeria in 2014, starting in Lagos before expanding to other major cities and becoming one of the leading players in the country’s ride-hailing industry.
The company’s exit took effect on September 2, 2026, marking the end of its 12-year presence in the Nigerian market.
Uber’s departure comes amid challenges facing businesses in Nigeria, including rising operating costs, inflation, currency volatility, regulatory pressures and increasing competition in the ride-hailing sector.
The company said the decision was part of its evolving business priorities and investment strategy, with a focus on markets where it can create value for drivers and riders at scale.
The development has sparked discussions about the challenges facing technology-driven businesses operating in Nigeria and the sustainability of digital transportation services in the country.
Uber’s exit also leaves existing ride-hailing operators with an opportunity to strengthen their presence and attract drivers and passengers previously using the platform.
