President Bola Tinubu has written to the country’s 36 State Houses of Assembly, seeking their support for constitutional amendments to establish state police across Nigeria.
The proposal is part of ongoing efforts to reform the nation’s security architecture and strengthen policing at the sub-national level.
If approved, the amendment would provide constitutional backing for state police, allowing states to establish and operate their own police services alongside the Nigeria Police Force.
The move is expected to spark renewed debate over the benefits and challenges of decentralising policing, with supporters arguing it will improve security while critics have raised concerns about possible political misuse by state governments.
