President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following the resignation of Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
The President said the reform would address longstanding structural weaknesses in the administration and development of the sport, with emphasis on governance, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability. He also directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the NFF Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure continuity in football administration.
The reform process is expected to involve broad consultations with football stakeholders, as well as engagement with FIFA and CAF, while ensuring Nigeria remains compliant with international football regulations. Tinubu said the country’s football system must match its abundant talent, public support and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.
