About two hundred and eighty seven were kidnapped when the gunmen on motorcycles rode through their school, taking them away in an incident that sparked outrage and condemnation from several quarters.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, a total of one hundred and thirty seven students were rescued, contrary to reports that two hundred and eighty seven children were abducted by bandits on March 6.
According to the statement, the children were rescued in Zamfara State in the early hours of yesterday, through the joint efforts of the military and local authorities.
Shortly after, the President commended the efforts of security agencies in securing the release of the schoolchildren.
He assured Nigerians that his administration is deploying detailed strategies to ensure that schools remain safe sanctuaries of learning, not lairs for wanton abductions.
