President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the swift and decisive response of Nigeria’s military in assisting the Republic of Benin to thwart an attempted coup against its 35-year-old democratic government.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday evening by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the intervention followed two separate requests from the Beninese government after coup plotters launched an attack at dawn, seizing the National Television station and regrouping at a military camp.
President Tinubu, in his capacity as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, directed the Nigerian Air Force to deploy fighter jets into Benin’s airspace to support efforts to dislodge the mutineers.
The prompt action by Nigerian forces reportedly helped restore order and safeguard Benin Republic’s democratic institutions. Further details on the stabilisation efforts are expected in the coming hours.
