HYPREP is the agency under the Federal Ministry of Environment handling the Ogoni Clean-up project on oil spill sites.

President Tinubu on Saturday, approved the appointment of Olufemi Adekanmbi as the new Project Coordinator of the project.

Reacting to the development, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) stated that the foundation for appointing non-Ogonis as Project Coordinators of HYPREP was laid by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, when he created HYPREP instead of an Ogoni Environmental Restoration Authority as recommended by UNEP.

The Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, Fyneface Dumnamene, said no one should blame President Tinubu for the appointment and cautioned against attaching ethnic coloration to the appointment of Adekanmbi, who is also a Niger Deltan.

Dumnamene emphasized that HYPREP is a federal cleanup project made so by former President Jonathan, which allows for the appointment of its coordinator from any part of the country, similar to other Ogonis appointed to other federal agencies, past or present.
