There appears to be no end to the war of words between the Peoples Democratic Party-controlled government of Rivers State and the main opposition All Progressives Congress in the state. In the build-up to the re-run state and federal legislative elections on 19th of March, the Rivers State Government has accused the APC of planning to use the military to rig the polls. The Commissioner for Information, AUSTIN TAM-GEORGE made the allegation against the backdrop of a purported comment credited to the Acting National Chairman of APC, SEGUN ONI.According to a statement issued by the Information Commission, the APC national leader had allegedly blamed Governor NYESOM WIKE for the spate of violence in the state. But the commissioner, AUSTIN TAM-GEORGE condemned the purported comment, which he described as provocative and irresponsible. He said the State Government was not involved in the cult-related violence that has claimed some lives in parts of the state. The Commissioner said the APC’s allegations were part of a plan to incite the military and other security forces against the people of Rivers State. He said the intention is to militarize the state and use the security forces to steal results of the forthcoming re-run election.TAM-GEORGE further added that the attempt by the APC to appropriate every dead person in River State as their member might mean that the party is the sponsor of satanic cult clashes in part of the state.
