The Rivers State House of Assembly is set to begin public hearing on the Administration of Criminal Justice Bill of 2015. To this end, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has welcomed the move on the basis that the criminal justice system in Rivers State has been more of a problem than a solution. State Chairman of the TUC, CHIKA ONUEGBU noted that the criminal justice system in the state had become an instrument of oppression. In a correspondence accompanying the TUC’s formal presentation to the public hearing, ONUEGBU said some persons rely on the inefficiencies and ineffectiveness of the criminal justice system to commit heinous crimes, knowing that they will never be brought to justice.
He said public confidence in the justice delivery system had waned considerably to a level that a great number of people now resort to self-help. The State TUC Chairman said the foregoing observations underscore the importance the union attaches to the domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
