The Nigerian Senate has called for the establishment of ranches and grazing reserves across the country, as a means to end the recurring deadly conflicts between nomadic Fulani herdsmen and inhabitants of farming communities. The Senate also voted to approve a motion for the adoption of other modern methods of livestock rearing owners across the country, after the Senators took turns to condemn the excesses of armed Fulani herdsmen who have wrecked havoc in many communities..The resolutions were based on a motion moved by Senator CHUKWUKA UTAZI in reaction to the massacre of inhabitants of communities in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The lawmakers in the upper chamber of the National Assembly unanimously endorsed the motion in recognition of the grave danger the continued killings by herdsmen pose to national security, harmonious communal life and national unity. Our Abuja correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the recommendations were brought to the fore following massive protest around Abuja yesterday by aggrieved people of Benue State. The Senate also resolved to conduct a public hearing on the matter.
