The Nigerian Senate has begun considering a bill for the establishment of agricultural credit scheme to promote commercial agriculture in the country.Our correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the bill intends to provide credit support for production, storage and processing of commodities, as well as market development and agricultural enterprises.The sponsor of the bill, Senator MAO OHUABUNWA of Abia North, while leading the debate on the general principle of the legislation, said the aim is to trigger a revolution in commercial agriculture and enhance food security.In his contribution; Deputy Senate President, IKE EKWEREMADU stressed the need to develop a proper mechanism that would ensure effective management of loans for agricultural purposes. Senator EKWEREMADU said credit financiers and commercial banks that are involved in credit disbursement to farmers must be protected to ensure that all stakeholders meet their financial obligations.In his remarks; Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI assured that the Senate would ensure provisions that would make loans available for commercial farmers.
