The Nigeria Customs Service says it has raked in over one point one billion naira in revenue from the importation of rice between the months of October and November this year. The NCS said the revenue pool accrued from the importation of seventeen point five metric tonnes of rice through the land border. The figures were disclosed during a strategic session convened by the Comptroller-General of Customs, retired Colonel HAMEED ALI to review revenue performance of the service for the year. You will recall that the Nigeria Customs Service had come under criticism after the new management team unilaterally directed the lifting of the ban on land border importation of rice. The Senate has already passed a motion directing President MUHAMMADU BUHARI to order the Comptroller General of Customs to reverse the decision. But the Customs had defended the action by the Comptroller General on grounds that the removal of restriction on land border importation of rice would help to reduce smuggling of the commodity into the country and increase revenue for the Federal Government. The figures were revealed in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the NCS, WALE ADENIYI, on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs.
