The International Criminal Court in The Hague is due to sentence former warlord in the Democratic Republic of Congo, JEAN-PIERRE BEMBA.

The former Vice President was found guilty of war crimes in March for failing to stop his rebels from killing and raping people in neighbouring Central African Republic in 2002 and 2003.

The ICC found was able to establish that the Movement for the Liberation of Congo led by BEMBA had directed a widespread attack against the civilian population in Central African Republic.

During the trial, the prosecutor demanded a 25-year jail term for BEMBA, but the defence lawyers have already announced that they would appeal against the judgment.
