Nigeria’s para powerlifting contingent has departed the country for the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships scheduled to hold in Cairo, Egypt, from October 9 to 18, 2025.
The milestone event marks the first time the World Championships will be hosted on African soil, symbolising a new era for the sport on the continent.
The first batch of Team Nigeria athletes left on Tuesday to the cheers of officials, fans, and supporters, while the second batch is expected to depart Lagos today (Wednesday) to complete the full team representing the nation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Sports Commission expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness and commitment to maintaining Nigeria’s global dominance in para powerlifting.
The Commission also reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for the athletes and its dedication to promoting inclusivity and excellence across all sporting disciplines.
Nigeria remains one of the world’s leading nations in para powerlifting, having consistently secured medals at major international events, including the Paralympic Games and previous World Championships.
The Cairo championship is seen as a landmark moment for African para sports, offering a platform to showcase the continent’s growing capacity and commitment to disability sports.
The 10-day competition will feature elite para powerlifters from around the world, all competing for world titles across various weight categories.
