Southampton FC have been expelled from the Championship play-offs following disciplinary action linked to the club’s alleged involvement in the ‘Spygate’ controversy.
The decision, announced by league authorities, removes Southampton from contention for promotion despite their qualification for the play-offs after a strong season campaign.
As a result of the ruling, Middlesbrough FC have been reinstated into the play-offs and will now face Hull City AFC in the Championship play-off final scheduled for May 23.
The reshuffle represents a major twist in the promotion race, with Middlesbrough given a renewed opportunity to compete for a place in the Premier League.
Southampton, however, are not without recourse, as the club retains the right to appeal the decision through the league’s disciplinary process.
