Smuggled car clampdown : Senate buckles for Customs, summons controller General.

The Senate has passed a resolution for the Comptroller General of Customs, HAMMED ALI, to appear before it in his official uniform.

The face off is as a result of the move by the customs to clampdown on vehicles without import duty certificate, which the Senate had called for suspension of action but the Customs insisted on going ahead.

Senator DINO MELAYE of the APC from Kogi West drew the attention of the Senate to the development during plenary.

Senator MELAYE said Comptroller General of Customs must be called to order for disregarding a resolution of the Senate on the matter.

The Senator noted that latest media report indicating that the customs was going ahead with the anti-smuggling policy despite the Senate intervention was not acceptable.

The position was supported by other Senators, including the Senate Leader, Senator AHMED LAWAN, who maintained that government officials summoned before the Senate must do so within the stipulated time.

Senator LAWAN challenged the Nigerian Customs Service to take steps to secure the nation’s borders.
