SERAP urges ICC to investigate kidnappings in Nigeria

The petition dated September 4, 2021 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, was directed to the group’s Prosecutor Karim Khan.

The organization is asking the ICC to probe closure of schools, and the persistent failure of Nigerian authorities at different levels to end the abduction which according to them is amounting to crimes against humanity.

According to SERAP, this follows the string of abductions and closure of schools in some parts of Nigeria, including the recent closure of schools in Zamfara State after scores of students were abducted by gunmen from a state-run high school in Maradun district.

The group noted that the repeated abductions and absence to safe and enabling learning environments give rise to individual criminal responsibility.
