This is because such serving Ministers and Federal lawmakers continue to receive pensions from their various state governments, in addition to salaries from the National Assembly.
SERAP has written to the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, ABUBAKAR MALAMI, asking him to initiate legal action against the former governors, who are now either senators or ministers.
SERAP is looking at helping the Federal Government to recover over forty billion naira from the affected officials and legislators accruing through double payments.
The demand by SERAP was contained in an open letter to the Attorney General, which was signed by ADETOKUNBO MUMUNI, who is the Executive Director.
Some of the former governors that SERAP wants to make refunds to their state governments include
Senate President, BUKOLA SARAKI, as well as Senators GODSWILL AKPABIO, THEODORE ORJI, ABDULLAHI ADAMU, SAM EGWU, SHAABA LAFIAGI and RABIU KWANKWASO.
The Minster of Transportation, ROTIMI AMAECHI, was also mentioned by SERAP, as well as the Minister of Solid Mineral, Doctot KAYODE FAYEMI, the Minister of Labour, Doctor CHRIS NGIGE and the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, BABATUNDE FASHOLA.
Former Governors of Plateau State, JOSHUA DARIYE and JONAH JANG were also listed, just as Senator AHMED SANI YARIMA, DANJUMA GOJE, BUKAR ABBA IBRAHIM, ADAMU ALIERO, GEORGE AKUME, ENYINAYA ABARIBE and BIODUN OLUJIMI.
SERAP wants the Attorney General of the Federation to challenge the legality of states’ laws that provide for former governors and their deputies to enjoy emoluments while drawing normal salaries and allowances in their new political offices.
