The Senate took the position following a motion moved by the Senator Representing Rivers East Senatorial District, Senator George Sekibo at the Upper Chamber.
Senator Sekibo while moving his motion complained that the ‘Joint Technical Task Force Team on Emergency Response to COVID-19 on Challenges on Movement of Food and Agricultural inputs in the Country’ may hamper efforts being made by the Rivers state government on COVID-19.
Responding to the motion, Senate President, Ahmed Lawan said while the issue raised required no debate, the Senate will reach out to the President to ensure that there is no breach of security in Rivers state.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Joseph Mukan, had assured that the movement of those transporting food items including livestock to Rivers State will no longer be disrupted.
CP Mukan during the inauguration of the ‘Joint Technical Task Force Team on Emergency Response to COVID-19 on Challenges on Movement of Food and Agricultural inputs in the Country’ said it is important that people are not starved during a crisis.
Officials of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Nigeria Union of Journalists are represented in the task force.
Other members of the team include; a representative from the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners and Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
