The bill proposed a levy of five naira per litre of petrol purchased by motorists in the country.
But it was greeted with criticism and threat of industrial action by the organized labour movement in Nigeria.
The mass rejection of the bill was based on fears that it could lead to additional increase in the pump price of petrol.
But the sponsor of the bill Senator KABIRU GAYA had always maintained that the levy of fuel purchase would help to ensure that federal roads are constantly maintained.
