The Senate has constituted a 12-member ad-hoc committee to advise the legislature on how to respond to growing international concerns over alleged state-backed persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
The decision was taken during a closed-door session on Tuesday, where lawmakers discussed recent claims by the United States Government suggesting possible acts of genocide against Christians in some parts of the country.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, said the committee would examine the allegations, assess their implications for Nigeria’s international image, and recommend appropriate legislative actions.
He noted that the Senate remains committed to protecting the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their faith, and ensuring that the country’s sovereignty and reputation are not undermined by unverified external reports.
The committee is expected to engage relevant government agencies, religious bodies, and civil society organizations before submitting its report to the Senate for further legislative consideration.
