On the issue of cyber security; the Senate resolved to ask the National Security Adviser to alert security agencies and financial institutions on the growing threat by hackers.
The Senate Committee on Information and Communication Technology and Cyber Crime was also mandated to convoke a national stakeholder’s conference on cyber security.
The sponsor of the motion, Senator BUHARI ABDULFATAI of Oyo North, had expressed concern about the worrisome dimension of cyber crime and insecurity and the need for a concerted effort to secure Nigeria’s cyberspace.
Senator ABDULFATAI also disclosed oversight findings by the Senate Committee which shows ICT shortfall in the country and the porous nature of Nigeria’s cyberspace.
In his remarks; the Deputy Senate President, IKE EKWERENMADU who presided over plenary, said government agencies charged with investigation, prevention and punishment of cybercrimes should be proactive?.
The Senate also resolved to investigate the Calabar viewing centre tragedy of 22nd of April, based on a motion moved by Senator GERSHOM BASSEY, who represents Cross River South Senatorial District
The Senate Committee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy was mandated to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the accident and report its findings and recommendations to the Senate.
The Committee is expected to invite officials of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency and the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company.
