Senate moves to protect Nigeria Territorial waters against Piracy.

The bill seeks to suppress piracy by providing stiffer punishment for offences of piracy and other maritime crimes.

Our correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the bill sponsored by Senator NELSON EFFIONG of Akwa Ibom South was massively supported by lawmakers in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, Senator EFFIONG observed that sea piracy in Nigeria has grown into a disturbing economic crime.

Senator EFFIONG noted that the existing laws on piracy are obsolete and needed to be upgraded, which is what the bill seeks to achieve.

The Bill was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Navy with a mandate carry out more legislative work and report back in four weeks.
