Senate Defends Electoral Act Amendments as Being in Nigerians’ Interest

The Senate has defended its recent amendments to the Electoral Act, stating that lawmakers carried out extensive deliberations to ensure the provisions serve the best interests of Nigerians.

On Tuesday, the Upper Chamber amended the Act to allow for the electronic transmission of election results, while also making provisions for technical challenges that may arise during the electoral process.

The decision marks a reversal of the Senate’s earlier position, in which it rejected the compulsory electronic transmission of results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

Lawmakers said the revised approach reflects a balance between embracing technology and safeguarding the credibility of elections in areas where technical limitations could affect result transmission.
